“You should ask Guy out,” Mary said, as they worked together to collapse the hide-a-bed the next morning.

“Don’t be ridiculous.” Hannah picked up a seat cushion and placed it on the couch.

“I’m serious.” Mary added another cushion. “I saw the way he was looking at you last night. I think he likes you.”

“He’s my co-worker.”

“So?” Mary put on the final cushion. “Lots of people date their co-workers.”

“By the end of summer, I might be his boss.”

“But he’s so nice.”

The toilet flushed in the background. Mary looked over her shoulder to where Cheryl was in the bathroom, door shut. “You saw how great he was with Gran last night. If Guy hadn’t asked her about physical therapy, we never would have known that her doctor had been encouraging her to go to PT for years.”

“I feel awful,” said Hannah. “I wish I had known that the doctor had submitted that referral a long time ago, but that Gran had put it off because she was worried about transportation.”

“It’s not our fault.” Mary artfully arranged the blanket she’d made over the back of the second-hand sofa bed, hiding a tear in the upholstery. “Gran never lets us go back with her to the exam room, so we didn’t know what the doctor had recommended until Guy asked.”

Hannah sat on the couch. “Still, I feel like I failed her.”

“You’re not responsible for the whole world. Gran’s a grown woman who’s capable of making her own decisions.” Mary opened the top dresser drawer and took out her makeup bag. The rest of their salvaged belongings were in boxes piled in the corner. Mary walked to the kitchenette and opened a cabinet where she’d hung a mirror, and dabbed foundation onto her already flawless skin. “Back to what I was saying about Guy, maybe you could invite him to the movies. There’s a new one playing in town that opens tomorrow night. One of the baristas told me it was good.”

“We’re looking at another apartment tomorrow night, remember? Fingers crossed that the one I’m viewing this morning works out, but if not…” Hannah collected her shoes from their spot next to the couch, and put them on. “You said you scheduled it with work so you’d have the night off.”

“Oh. That’s right. The ancient apartment building across from the laundromat.”

“It’s not ancient. It’s from the 1960s. That’s the same age as Strawberry Cottage.”

Mary raised her perfectly arched eyebrows. “Like I said. Ancient.”

“Who’s ancient?” The bathroom door opened, and Cheryl emerged, wearing her bathrobe. “You weren’t talking about me, were you?”

“Of course not.” Hannah opened the closet so that Cheryl could select an outfit. “We were talking about the apartments we’re checking out tomorrow night.” She looked back at Mary. “There’s another option we can consider if we get desperate. Keith told me about rooms for rent in a shared house he knows about.”

“My Keith?” Cheryl pushed her walker closer to the closet.

“I didn’t realize you’d called dibs on him,” said Mary.

“Patti called dibs, which I think is unfair since she’s married.
